What Triggers are Causing Your Rosacea?

The most common Rosacea triggers include food and drinks, exercise, weather, medications, and emotional stress.

If you are experiencing Rosacea, once you have determined the triggers that worsen your condition, the best things to do is to avoid them.

The avoidance of products, activities or emotions that trigger your symptoms can help to reduce them in the long term. 

Of course, this can be easier said than done.

But, we’ll show you all the rosacea triggers so you can avoid them and live a happier, relatively rosacea-free life.

Most Common Foods that Cause Rosacea

Food and drinks that can cause an increase in the symptoms include what we call “hot foods”. This includes both hot in temperature and also hot in spice.

Hot foods can trigger your rosacea breakouts so do your best to stay away from them.

There are also many other foods to avoid when suffering with rosacea. Try removing one or two from your diet at a time to see if these are actually triggers for your rosacea symptoms.

Foods that should be avoided would include sour vegetables such as tomatoes, beets, radishes, and onions among others.

Foods that release histamines such as citrus fruits should be placed on the no list along with sugars and starches.

There are certain spices that cause an anti-inflammatory response such as black pepper, ginger or cloves, that might be avoided.

There are many proteins that can be included in the Rosacea person’s diet, but seafood and beef should be placed on the list to avoid.

 Rosacea Foods to Avoid

  • Hot Foods (Spicy and High in Temperature)
  • Sour vegetables including tomatoes, beets, radishes, and onions.
  • Spices like black pepper, ginger, and cloves
  • Proteins like seafood and beef.

The consumption of alcohol also tends to aggravate rosacea symptoms.

Each person is different and will have to evaluate themselves to determine if these foods and temperatures have an effect on them.

Spicy foods might cause one person problems and be completely fine for someone else.

There is no way to say whether they are a rosacea trigger for you outside of trying each one of them.


Will a lot of Exercise Cause Rosacea? 

Rosacea can also be affected by activities like exercising. It doesn’t really matter if this exercising is something you do on a daily basis, like going to the gym, or something you do irregularly, like running. 

Other types of exercise that are a problem for some people can include heavy physical exertion.

This can involve exertion at work or even around the house.

The cause of this condition is not exactly known, but it is known that certain triggers do cause the face to flush. When the face flushes, it then becomes more red and warmer.

What Type of Rosacea Do I Have?

There are considered to be four subtypes of Rosacea:

  1. Subtype one-Referred to as Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea or ETR. This subtype is associated with flushing, facial redness, and visible blood vessels.
  2. Subtype two-Referred to as Papulopustular Rosacea. This subtype is associated with acne-like breakouts. Is typically seen in middle-aged women.
  3. Subtype three- Referred to as Rhinophyma. This subtype is rare and is associated with the thickening of the skin across the nose. It is typically seen more in men and accompanies another subtype.
  4. Subtype four- Referred to as Ocular Rosacea. This subtype of rosacea involves the eye area. It can be difficult to treat because of its proximity or closeness to the eye.

What is the Best Treatment for Rosacea?

The main goal of treatment for rosacea is to control your symptoms. There is no cure for this condition and it often requires rosacea creams, medication treatments, or other skin-care treatments. 

The medications that are typically used include ones that help to decrease the facial redness.

One medication called brimonidine (Mirvaso), has been found to be effective in helping with the redness. This is a gel that when applied to the skin works by constricting the blood vessels of the face.

It doesn’t work immediately, but the results may be seen within 12 hours after it is applied.

Other medications such as azelaic acid and metronidazole have also been shown to reduce pimples and redness.

Oral antibiotics might be ordered for some people to help decrease bacteria and fight inflammation. Doxycycline, tetracycline, minocyclne, and others have been used for this condition.
