Rosacea is a skin condition which can cause a person to experience redness on their face. With some people, blood vessels may even be visible on the face and there may be small, red, pus-filled bumps.

These symptoms are sometimes misdiagnosed as acne or other skin problems.

The main treatment for rosacea is to try and control the signs and symptoms. The length of treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms.

Some of the medications that are used work to decrease the redness, oral antibiotics, and isotretinoin.

However, when otc rosacea products fail, many people turn to natural remedies for rosacea like essentials oil.

Other rosacea treatments could include laser therapy, dermabrasion, intense light therapy, and electrosurgery.

Sometimes these treatments do wonders for rosacea. In other cases, the rosacea symptoms only mildly improve.

Are Essential Oils Good for Rosacea?

Alternative medicine is often used to help treat Rosacea. Essential oils are one of the top alternative medicines for rosacea.

rosacea essential oilsEssential oils are concentrated oils which are extracted from such things as roots, leaves, flowers, and other parts of plants.

Most essential oils are not used full strength on the skin because they are too potent.

The process is usually to dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil prior to them being applied to the skin.

Here are Three Great Natural Ingredients for Rosacea

  1. Organic Grape Seed Oil - Contains vitamin E, proteins, fatty acids, calcium, potassium, beta-carotene, selenium, minerals, and magnesium. This oil is known for it’s awesome moisturizing benefits.
  2. Organic Jojoba Seed Oil - Provides hydration throughout the day because it doesn’t evaporate. This oil isn’t toxic and contains vitamin E and minerals.
  3. Organic Chamomile Flower Extract - This essential oil is a powerful anti-inflammatory oil. It also contains azulene that offers superior calming effects.

Some of the essential oils that are sometimes used in the alternative treatment of Rosacea, include:

  1. Evening Primrose - This is an oil which is extracted from the seeds of a plant that is high in GLA content. Evening Primrose can be used both as a topical oil or even a herbal supplement. The action of Evening Primrose is to help normalize the barrier functions of the skin. It also offers astringent and calming effects, as well as hydration.
  2. Rose Hip Oil - Consists of a high concentration of essential fatty acid, GLA. These are necessary for the creation and maintenance of healthy cellular membranes. When used in the treatment of Rosacea, Rose Hip Oil is used as an antiseptic and also to help regulate sebum production.
  3. Lavender Essential Oil - The Lavender plant is used for the extraction of this essential oil. It is extracted through steam distillation. The Lavender Essential Oil is considered to be a favorite oil that is used for all skin types, but particularly used in the treatment of Rosacea skin. The action of this oil is to calm the skin. It has anti-inflammatory properties as well.
  4. Jojoba Oil - The ground or crushed seeds of the jojoba plant are used to extract a wax ester. This is used on a number of skin and body products and also used in an herbal supplement. The emollient properties of this oil are used to treat Rosacea. The Jojoba Oil has non-irritating effects and because it decreases trans-epidermal water loss, it also helps to keep the person’s skin moist. When Jojoba Oil is applied to the skin, it helps to promote cell regeneration at the same time it hydrates the skin.
  5. Chamomile Oil - This oil contains azulene. Azulene is a compound that offers wonderful calming effects. When Chamomile Oil is used for the treatment of Rosacea, it helps to relieve inflammation and to smooth the skin.
  6. Borage Oil - The Borago officinalis plant is used for the extraction of Borage Oil. This oil is rich in gammalinolenic acid (GLA). GLA is an essential fatty acid which the body doesn’t produce naturally. Typically this essential oil is taken from food sources. Borage oil can be applied to the skin for Rosacea or also taken as an herbal supplement. The oil has an anti-inflammatory property that helps in the treatment of Rosacea by decreasing the reddening. Borage Oil works to promote healthy skin and is an effective emollient.
  7. Tea Tree Oil - Tea Tree Oil is used to help fight the symptoms of rosacea. Tea Tree Oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties. This oil helps to decrease swelling and redness. If you are considering using this oil, a patch test should be performed because of potential allergic reactions or irritations that have been reported by some.

Should a person use essential oils to help control their Rosacea?

The use of essential oils for Rosacea is questionable. Some oils are found to aggravate the condition while others seem to actually help. If using an essential oil, one that is fragrance-free would be best, because the fragrances tend to irritate the skin.

To use or not to use will depend on the each person’s decision. For some people the treatment of this condition with medications or procedures such as dermabrasion isn’t effective. In this case then alternative treatments may be used.

Some people have a hard time dealing with a medication that causes them side effects and may choose to try a more natural treatment. Trying essential oils for rosacea is not a bad idea in this instance.

If you are planning on using essential oils for Rosacea, you might want to run it by your dermatologist or physician prior to trying them.
